Following a disputed goal by Harry Kane that was controversially overturned in Wednesday’s 1-1 Champions League Group D draw with Sporting, Tottenham Hotspur boss Antonio Conte believed that VAR is “doing a lot of damage” to the big teams.
Emerson Royal hit a Sporting player with a header and the ball bounced in front of Kane in 90+5 minutes. The VAR stepped in and advised the referee to refuse to recognise the goal after Kane shot the ball into the goal.
Conte also itted that VAR has made many unfair decisions that Tottenham have to suffer. Therefore, he had a bad impression of the system.
“The ball was in front of Kane. It’s a goal. I don’t understand the line that they put. It’s very difficult to comment on this decision. VAR is causing a lot of damage,” Conte told BT Sports.
“I want to see if in another stadium or another big team if they disallow this type of goal. I’d like to know this. I feel a lot of injustice. I don’t like this type of situation because I see not positive things.” Conte added.
Tottenham have 8 points from 5 matches, leading Group D of the Champions League so far. However, they are only one point ahead of Sporting, Frankfurt and Marseille by two. The four teams in this group still have a chance to win tickets to the last 16 round.
Conte will not be able to manage Tottenham in the final game. After VAR disallowed Kane’s goal, the former Chelsea and Juventus manager was shown a red card for his reaction.
“A lot of people rushed into the field to protest after the decision to disallow the goal. And they gave me a red card because I am the most popular person on the pitch,” Conte said.
