The New York Yankees will be going to the World Series for the first time since 2009.
Juan Soto handed the Bronx Bombers the lead with a homer in the 10th inning and the Yankees downed the Cleveland Guardians 5-2 to capture the American League Championship Series in five games.
Leading off the 10th, Austin Wells walked and Alex Verdugo singled to second, whose throw resulted in an error by rookie second baseman Brayan Rocchio.
Gleyber Torres swung away, Soto batted next with two strikes logged unto the scoreboard.
Soto even received a one-ball, two-strike count but this home run landed the Yankees in the next inning.
“I was just thinking, ‘You got the upper hand on this guy. You got the edge on this guy. He can’t do anything’,” Soto said.
Giancarlo Stanton was also still an intense threat against the Guardians pitching a two run homer, his fourth for the series. He was named the series MVP.
“It was like a roller coaster and we were able to respond. We know there’s still a lot of work to do and it’s a long road, but we have to get there.” Stanton said.
Luke Weaver followed it up, and closed the books in the last of the 10th inning to give Yankees the victory in Game 5.
Despite a shocking year by the standards set by the Yankees and going out in five games, The Guardians put up a lot of fight under first year manager Stephen Vogt.
The Guardians have not been World Series champions since 1948, which marks the longest drought for major league baseball.
The Bronx Bombers will attempt to get their 28 th flag with the New York Mets or the Los Angeles Dodgers.
Game 6 of the National League Championship Series is scheduled for Sunday at Dodger Stadium. The Dodgers are currently that are ahead 3 – 2.
