Switzerland appeared strong to send Italy home from Euro 2024. Competing in the round of 16, Saturday 29 June 2024, Switzerland beat the defending champions with a score of 2-0.

The match at the Olympiastadion Berlin this time did not go according to expectations. Italy played badly, Switzerland appeared impressive and deserved to win.

This time, Switzerland’s two goals came from Remo Freuler (37′) and Ruben Vargas (46′). Italy could not provide significant resistance until the end of the match with only 1 shot on target.

This victory takes Switzerland to the last 8 of Euro 2024. Switzerland is waiting for the winner of the England vs Slovakia match which will be played tomorrow.

Unexpectedly, Switzerland actually played more aggressively from the first minute. Switzerland’s attack forced Italy to play defensively. 15 minutes running, Italy has not shown any resistance.

In the 24th minute, Italy was lucky to have a goalkeeper as tough as Donnarumma. Embolo had enough free shooting space, the ball was accurate, but Donnarumma was still able to stop it.

In the 37th minute, Switzerland’s attacks finally paid off. Vargas stabbed from the left side and sent a cross into the penalty box. The ball was controlled by Freuler who then shot hard. Goal! Switzerland 1-0 Italy.

Italy showed no resistance at all until the end of the first 45 minutes. Instead, Donnarumma again made an important save to prevent the opponent’s second goal.

The score 1-0 sent the players to the dressing room. Italy didn’t shoot at all in the first 45 minutes.

The match resumed and Switzerland immediately kicked off. The Italian defense was caught off guard. Aebischer’s found Vargas in the penalty box. Unguarded, Vargas shot hard at Donnarumma’s goal. Goal! Switzerland 2-0 Italy.

Switzerland’s second goal clearly changed the tempo of the game. The coaches of both teams made a number of substitutions. Entering the 70th minute, Italy started to play openly and dared to carry the ball.

Italy’s attacks were not dangerous enough. In the 74th minute, Scamacca’s close-range shot hit the post. Until the 80th minute, Italy had only fired 1 shot on target.

Entering the final 10 minutes, Italy still could not break down the Swiss defense. Spalletti’s substitution did not produce results. Frustration led Italy to defeat. Score 2-0 for Switzerland to win.
