The Spanish national team has confirmed a place in the semifinals at the 2020 European Cup. La Furia Roja stopped Switzerland through a penalty shootout in the Euro 2020 quarter-finals which took place on Friday 2 June 2021 night.
Both teams drew 1-1 in normal time. The score does not change until extra time is completed and proceeds to a penalty shootout.
Spain also finally ensured victory over Switzerland after three of their kicks managed to score the ball into the net. While Vladimir Petkovic’s troops were only able to score one goal through their first performer, Mario Gavranovic.
The Spanish national team coach, Luis Enrique, also itted that he was satisfied with the results obtained by his team this time. Even so, Enrique also doesn’t want his players to be engrossed in euphoria and focus on aiming for the championship title in this tournament.
“We are very proud. You would be wrong to think that we, or any of the semi-finalists, would be content to only go that far now. We all want to reach the final and win,” said Enrique, quoted from the official UEFA website, Saturday (3/7/2021).
“We faced Switzerland knowing their level and capacity. The opponent did not press us as high as possible,” he continued.
“The game entered a dangerous phase with the score 1-0, and they built a good breakthrough. The game changed completely, we dominated, were dangerous and created chances,” he said.
But on the other hand, Enrique disagrees with the assessment that the Spanish national team won over Switzerland only by luck because it was determined by the result of a penalty shootout.
“They say the penalty is a lottery, but I think it’s completely wrong,” continued the former Barcelona coach.
Next, Spain will face Italy in the semifinals of the 2020 European Cup. The match will be held at Wembley Stadium on Tuesday 6 July 2021.
