Leeds United and Burnley are confirmed to qualify for the Premier League next season as promoted teams from the Championship Division.
This certainty was obtained after Burnley defeated Sheffield United 2-1 in the 44th week of the Championship match, Monday (21/4/2025).
Burnley’s winning goals over Sheffield were scored by Josh Brownhill in the 28th minute and a penalty in the 44th minute. Meanwhile, Sheffield’s reply goal was scored by Thomas Cannon.
The victory made Burnley, who are now in second place in the Championship standings, collect 94 points, the same as Leeds as the leader of the standings.
Leeds and Burnley are both 8 points ahead of Sheffield. With two matches remaining, Sheffield will not be able to disturb Leeds and Burnley’s positions in the top two.
Therefore, Leeds and Burnley are confirmed to be promoted to the Premier League next season. Meanwhile, the teams below them will compete for points to qualify for the playoffs to win the remaining ticket to the Premier League.
Leeds will return to the Premier League after two seasons in the Championship, while Burnley has been up and down the divisions quite often.
In the Premier League, Southampton and Leicester City will be relegated to the Championship next season. Leicester is the latest team to fail to survive in the Premier League.
Southampton and Leicester do not have much time in the top division of the English League. After being promoted this season, both clubs must return to the second division, the Championship, next season.
A 0-1 defeat to Liverpool in the 33rd week of the English League at the King Power Stadium last weekend ensured Leicester was relegated from the Premier League.
With five matches remaining, The Foxes, who now have 18 points, are certain not to be able to get out of the red zone until the end of the season. Leicester was also relegated from the Premier League.
Southampton suffered a more tragic fate. The Saints were relegated first, precisely when there were still 7 matches left.
Southampton had to bury their hopes of surviving longer in the Premier League after losing 1-3 to Tottenham Hotspur in early April.
