Spain won on penalties against Switzerland in the quarter-finals of Euro 2020 (Euro 2021) with a score of 3-1 after a 1-1 draw in normal time.
On the first occasion, Sergio Busquets’ shot hit the post even though Yann Sommer had made the wrong move. Mario Gavranovic scored and put Switzerland 1-0 up.
On the second occasion, Dani Olmo scored and Unai Simon successfully blocked Fabian Schaer’s shot. The score is 1-1.
In the third executor, Rodri’s shot was blocked by Yann Sommer. Unai Simon also successfully blocked Manuel Akanji’s shot. The score is still 1-1.
For the fourth kicker, Gerard Moreno managed to do his job well. Ruben Vargas of Switzerland failed to score as his shot went high. Spain turned to lead 2-1.
Spain then confirmed a ticket to the semifinals of Euro 2020 (Euro 2021) through Mikel Oyarzabal’s shot. Oyarzabal outwitted Unai Simon and made Spain win 3-1 on penalties.
In normal time, the duel Switzerland vs Spain ended in a 1-1 draw. Spain took the lead through Denis Zakaria’s own goal in the eighth minute. This goal came from Jordi Alba’s hard kick that hit Zakaria’s leg and made the ball change direction into the goal.
Switzerland finally equalized in the 68th minute through Xherdan Shaqiri. The Spanish back line error was maximized by Father Freuler who sent a to Xherdan Shaqiri. Shaqiri coolly fired a low shot into the right corner of the goal.
12 minutes before normal time ended, Switzerland had to play with 10 men because Freuler was considered to have committed a hard foul on Gerard Moreno. This also prompted Swiss coach Vladimir Petkovic to make a number of changes including the withdrawal of Shaqiri and Haris Seferovic.
Spain, which was superior in number of players, appeared more dominant in the extra time round. In the 93rd minute, Jordi Alba’s landed at the feet of Gerard Moreno but Moreno’s shot was still off target.
Two minutes later, Jordi Alba fired a shot from outside the penalty box but was saved well by Yann Sommer.
In the 101st minute, Sommer again denied Spain’s golden opportunity through Moreno. Moreno’s shot from close range was blocked by Sommer. Two minutes later, it was Mikail Oyarzabal’s turn which could be countered by Sommer.
Entering the second half of extra time, Spain continued to confine Switzerland. Sommer’s toughness to guard the goal really became the mainstay of Switzerland.
Sommer continued to fend off shots that came from Spaniards ranging from Dani Olmo to Sergio Busquets’ header. The 1-1 draw lasted until there was a penalty shootout which was won by Spain.
