Ukraine beat Sweden 2-1 in the round of 16 of Euro 2020 (Euro 2021) which took place at Hampden Park Stadium, Glasgow, Scotland, Wednesday (40/6).
Ukraine took the lead in the 27th minute. Ukraine’s planned attack penetrated Sweden penalty box. Andriy Yarmolenko sent a into empty space. Oleksandr Zinchenko greeted him with a left-footed shot. The ball that slid fast had hit the hands of Robin Olsen but could not be stopped into Sweden goal.
Sweden’s efforts to score the new equalizer were successful in the 43rd minute. After receiving Alexander Isak’s , Emil Forsberg took off a fast kick from outside the penalty box which made the ball lodge in the Ukraine goal.
The second half of the game was more interesting. Both camps reciprocated opportunities. Forsberg opportunity in the 54th minute is still sideways.
A minute later it was Serhiy Sydorchuk’s turn to threaten Sweden goal. The score does not change because the ball only hits the goal post. Sweden’s opportunity in the 56th minute also only hit the post. Finishing Forsberg who tried to finish the counter-attack, failed to produce a goal.
Ten minutes later Bushchan saved Ukraine’s goal by brushing off Dejan Kulusevski’s kick. Ukraine’s counter-attack was then also thwarted by Sweden goalkeeper who was able to catch the ball kicked by Yarmolenko.
In the 69th minute Forsberg’s individual action ended with a strong right footed kick to make the ball hit the crossbar.
No goals were scored in the second half so the match had to go into extra time of 2×15 minutes.
Sweden had to play with 10 men from the 98th minute. Marcus Danielsson was awarded a red card after violating Artem Besedin. Initially referee Daniele Orsato gave a yellow card, but after seeing the replay another decision was made by the referee.
Outnumbered, Sweden is more ive. Ukraine also tried to confine the defense of the Blaugult squad. Fewer chances in extra time.
When the 1-1 scoreline held until the final seconds of extra time, a cross from Zinchenko on the left was completed with a fine header by Artem Dovbyk.
Ukraine advanced to the quarter-finals and will face England.
