Girona are reportedly interested in bringing Oriol Romeu back to the club from Barcelona in the January transfer window.
Romeu is still under contract with Barcelona until 2025, but he could be allowed to leave if the club can find a replacement for him.
The 32-year-old midfielder spent the 2022-23 season with Girona, playing a key role in their promotion back to La Liga. He then returned to Barcelona in the summer, but has struggled to break into the first team this season.
According to Mundo Deportivo, Girona are monitoring Romeu’s situation and would be keen to re-sign him if he becomes available. The club are said to be impressed with the player’s experience and leadership qualities.
Romeu is reportedly unhappy with his lack of playing time at Barcelona and is considering his options in the January transfer window. He is said to be open to returning to Girona, where he feels valued and appreciated.
The club’s sporting director, Quique Carcel, has itted that he would love to have Romeu back at the club.
“Personally, I would like one hundred percent [to have Romeu back]. He has brought us magical things,” he told Diari de Girona.
A move back to Girona would make sense for both the player and the club. Romeu would get the chance to play regularly and Girona would get a proven midfielder who can help them stay in La Liga.
Romeu came through the youth academy at Barcelona before making his debut for the club in 2011. He spent two seasons with Barcelona before ing Chelsea in 2014.
Romeu played four seasons for Chelsea, making over 100 appearances for the club. He won two Premier League titles, two FA Cups, and one UEFA League title during his time at Stamford Bridge.
If Romeu does return to Girona, it would be a major coup for the club and would send a message that they are ambitious and determined to succeed in La Liga.
