The WBC and IBF light heavyweight world champion Artur Beterbiev’s trainer Marc Ramsay, does not expect there will be, one day, a fight between Beterbiev and Saul “Canelo” Alvarez.
Earlier in November, Canelo jumped two weight divisions to a knockout on Russian boxer Sergey Kovalev, capturing the WBO light heavyweight title. Shortly thereafter, the Mexican vacated the title as he plans to fight in the super middleweight.
While Canelo and his managers had said at one point that a fight between Canelo with Beterbiev could prove to be a possibility in the future, Ramsay said he was convinced that the fight will never take place.
“It will never be done. I don’t think he’s going to fight my boy. Fighting Kovalev and fighting Beterbiev are two different stories.” Ramsay told Sky Sports.
Beterbiev has defeated Kovalev twice in the amateur ranks. A great rivalry has arisen between these two compatriots, but Ramsay said the bad blood between the two was purely competitive. Another opponent for the 35-year-old fighter is the current WBA world champion Dmitry Bivol in the light heavyweight.
“When we got into position to win a world title, there was never anything personal with Kovalev. It was a challenge since Kovalev was the world champion. Today, Beterbiev is not talking about Kovalev or Bivol, he just wants the headlines.” Ramsay said.
Beterbiev’s next fight is a mandatory defense of his IBF title, while he will face the Chinese icon, Meng Fanlong. His future fights could be held in England, where aspiring tops are hungry for opportunities.
“It’s very possible when you look at how tough the opposition in England is in the division. Anthony Yarde and Joshua Buatsi represent promising challenges. I am convinced that English fans will love Beterbiev’s offensive and spectacular boxing style,” Ramsay said.
